What geographic factors led the United States build the Panama C in Panama?

With an 80 kilometer wide isthmus located half way between North and South America, Panama seemed the logical location for many engineers. Heavy rains there provide plenty of fresh water to operate the locks. Lake Nicaragua was the other most tempting location for an interocean c before construction in Panama began, but an earthquake in Nicaragua sealed the fate, and Panama was picked. The rest is history.
