Is it proper for a girl to buy expensive gifts for a boyfriend if they are just dating?

This couple has been dating for about a year. He pretty much makes the decisions in thier relationships. At christmas he told her he wanted an xbox and one of the new games. Even though she was not working she borrowed almost five hundred dollars to get these things. She also made him a fleece tie blanket of his favorite college team. Then for christmas he told he he wanted a bigger tv. Nothing wrong with the flat screen that he had.. he just wanted bigger. She spent over 600 on the tv. He gave her his older flat screen to "borrow" because there was nothing wrong with it. He pressured her to dog sit his dog for a week at her apartment even though he knew she had a no pets clause in the lease if she were to get caught. For christmas he gave her a jacket that did not fit, an inexpensive wine rack and a picture to hang on the wall in her kitchen. I am not sure what she got for Valentines day, but im sure it wasnt much. She had on facebook that she was in a relationship and his name.. very soon someone "got on his facebook" and took it off of his so his name doesnt show on hers either. all either of them say is "in a relationship" She has a picture of him and her, he has a picture of his dog. He planned a holiday in California, friends house on the beach.. sun... a big deal... but somehow the plans fell through. they were in California with little money and no place to stay. Her mom had to deposit money in her account so that she could pay for a motel. He has broken two touch cell phones in one year... and two lap top computers ..with his hand. he borrowed her laptop. to me he doesnt care about her really... what would you say?
